The check-engine light

Same light. Very different days.

The check-engine light looks the same for a loose fuel cap and for a misfire that is overheating the catalytic converter. Dashbird reads the code behind it and tells you which one you have before you leave the driveway.

Low urgency
P0457

Evaporative emission system leak detected (fuel cap loose or off)

Tighten the fuel cap. The light should go out after a few drives, or clear it in the app.

Act now
P0301

Cylinder 1 misfire detected

Avoid hard acceleration. Unburnt fuel can damage the catalyst, so book the repair this week.

What an early warning is worth

Catch it early. Keep the thousands.

Most big repair bills start as a small fault the car already reports: a misfiring cylinder, a temperature creeping up, a voltage drifting down. Left alone, they grow into four-figure repairs. Dashbird watches for them on every drive and warns you while the fix is still small.

An engine damaged beyond the head gasket can pass $10,000. Dashbird can't fix a fault for you, and it can't promise one won't happen; it tells you early, so you can act while the repair is small. Transmission temperature appears on cars that report it.

US estimates for parts and labour: diagnosis and alternator from RepairPal (1, 2), catalytic converter from ConsumerAffairs, head gasket from Airtasker and ConsumerAffairs, transmission from SoFi and Synchrony. Your car and shop will differ.

The gauges update ten times a second. Watch RPM, speed, engine load and throttle next to coolant, oil, intake and transmission temperatures. Battery and charging voltage sit beside them, so a tired alternator can't catch you off guard.

Alerts

Warned before it gets expensive.

Dashbird watches the data while you drive. Overheating, a weak charging system, a new trouble code or a misfiring cylinder reaches your lock screen right away, even with the screen off. Each issue sends one alert.

Questions

Before you plug in.

Will it work with my car?

If your car was sold in the US from 1996 on, or is a petrol car sold in the EU from 2001 on (diesel from 2004), it has an OBD2 port and Dashbird can read it. Most cars sold elsewhere since the mid-2000s have one too. If your make isn't among the 50, Dashbird will most likely still work.

Which adapter should I buy?

Dashbird is built around the KONNWEI KW905, and any ELM327 adapter with Bluetooth LE works on both iPhone and Android. Adapters with classic Bluetooth only work on Android, and Wi-Fi adapters aren't supported.

Can it turn off the check-engine light?

Yes. After a repair, clear the codes in Diagnostics. Clearing also resets the readiness monitors and freeze frame, and the light comes back if the fault does, which tells you whether the fix held.

Does it work with electric cars?

Electric cars report fewer engine readings, so the dashboard focuses on voltage, temperatures and trips while codes and alerts work the same way. Some models need an adapter cable to reach their diagnostic port.

Will the adapter drain my battery?

An adapter draws very little power, and Dashbird warns you if the battery runs low with the engine off. If the car will sit for a few weeks, unplug the adapter.

Is Dashbird made by my car's manufacturer?

No. Dashbird is an independent app made by Innolope. It reads the standard diagnostic data every car exposes and isn't affiliated with any carmaker.

Does it replace my mechanic?

No. It tells you what the car reports so you can decide what to do next, and walk into the shop knowing the code and what it means.
