New Gas-Powered Cadillac XT5, CT5 and XT6 Are Due From 2027 Into 2028

GM has repeated its plan for all-new gas Cadillac sedans and crossovers, led by a redesigned XT5. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what it means if you shop now.

General Motors used its third-quarter letter to shareholders on October 20, 2026, to repeat a plan that marks a sharp turn for Cadillac: "all-new Cadillac sedans and crossovers" with gasoline engines are on the way. CEO Mary Barra first laid out the plan on GM's second-quarter earnings call on July 21, naming redesigned versions of the XT5, CT5 and XT6. Launches start in 2027 and continue into 2028.

Earlier this decade, GM positioned Cadillac as its electric spearhead and said the brand would sell only EVs by 2030. Cadillac still sells four EVs, the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq and Escalade IQ. The new gas models are meant to sit alongside them, not replace them.

What GM has confirmed

  • Three models. Barra named the CT5 sedan and the XT5 and XT6 crossovers. Global Cadillac vice president Kristian Aquilina later wrote on LinkedIn that the XT5 comes first, followed by the CT5 and XT6, according to CarExpert.
  • Timing. Most accounts of the July call, including GM Authority's and Carscoops', report that Barra put the first launch in spring 2027. CarExpert reported the third quarter of 2027. Either way, the rollout runs into 2028.
  • No exact dates or specs. GM has not announced engines, fuel economy, prices or on-sale dates for any of the three.

What is expected, model by model

XT5. The redesigned midsize crossover should be the first to arrive. A second-generation XT5 already sells in China, and GM Authority expects the North American version to be built at Spring Hill, Tennessee, where the current XT5 and the Lyriq are made. Reports differ on how closely the US model will follow the Chinese one. In China, the XT5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and a plug-in hybrid version went on sale there in recent weeks. On October 18, SAIC-GM added a cheaper PHEV trim called Air, priced at 239,900 yuan, about $35,900. The Chinese PHEV pairs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with an engine for a combined 362 hp.

XT6. The three-row crossover left production after the 2025 model year. GM Authority, citing its own sources, expects the new XT6 to enter production around mid-2028, again at Spring Hill, with six- and seven-seat layouts.

CT5. The sedan is the least defined of the three. CarExpert points to earlier reporting that it will use an updated version of the current rear-drive platform. Engines are unknown.

GM has not said whether any of the US models will be hybrids. On GM's third-quarter earnings call, Barra said GM will add hybrids in 2027 across several of the key segments it competes in, but she did not name models.

Buyer brief

What it means for buyers

  • Shopping for an XT5 now? The 2026 XT5 is the current first-generation model, on sale since 2017, starting at $44,800 before destination with a 2.0-liter turbo four or an available 310-hp 3.6-liter V6. A redesign is expected in 2027. Buying the outgoing model can make sense if the price is right, but expect it to lose value faster once the new one arrives. Ask for that to be reflected in the deal.
  • Waiting for a plug-in XT5? It exists in China, but nothing confirms it for the US yet. Do not plan a purchase around it until Cadillac announces US powertrains.
  • Want a three-row gas Cadillac below the Escalade? That gap stays open until the new XT6, which is not expected before mid-2028 production. Used XT6s from the 2025 model year and earlier fill that gap in the meantime.
  • Own a current XT5, XT6 or CT5? Nothing changes for you. Warranty, recalls and dealer service continue as usual, and the outgoing XT5's turbo 2.0-liter is a well-supported GM engine.

Cadillac has not given a reveal date for the new XT5. Until it does, treat any US specifications for the three models as unconfirmed.
