Escalade IQ and IQL recall: GM will replace the battery in five SUVs
A misadjusted press at a GM plant left a part loose inside some battery modules built in May 2026. Five Cadillacs are affected, and dealers will swap the whole high-voltage pack.

General Motors is replacing the entire high-voltage battery in a small group of 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL electric SUVs because a component inside some battery modules may not be fixed in place. GM filed the recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on July 30, 2026 as campaign 26V494 (GM number N262562600). The same defect touches a few Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups, and an amendment on September 10 added a single 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup. In total, 11 vehicles in the US are included, and only five of them are Cadillacs.
What GM found
According to GM's Part 573 report, workers at GM's Ramos Arizpe assembly plant in Mexico spotted two battery modules on May 17, 2026 whose sense line assembly fingers were not fully seated. Those parts are assembled at Factory Zero in Detroit, and GM traced the problem to a press machine there that had been knocked out of adjustment during scheduled downtime. A loose piece can shift inside the pack and damage it, and GM says a battery damaged this way carries a higher risk of fire.
GM started containment on May 19. A quality manager then flagged through the company's Speak Up for Safety program that some vehicles with suspect modules might already have left the plant, and GM opened a formal investigation on June 5. By checking photographs taken during module production, GM cleared most of the suspect batteries and narrowed the list to 14 vehicles worldwide, 10 of them in the US. The company says it knows of no fires or other field incidents tied to the condition. Its safety decision board approved the recall on July 23.
The affected Cadillacs, per the filing:
- 2026 Escalade IQ: two vehicles, built May 12 to May 18, 2026
- 2026 Escalade IQL: three vehicles, built May 8 to May 12, 2026
The rest are four 2026 Silverado EVs, one 2026 Sierra EV and the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup, which GM found later in corrected service records.
The fix is a full pack swap
GM is not repairing individual modules. Dealers will install a new high-voltage battery built from modules made outside the suspect window, using one of three assemblies listed in the dealer bulletin depending on the vehicle's battery option. The bulletin budgets about 9.5 hours of labor, and the work may only be done at a GM dealer certified for EV repairs by a technician with the required training. Dealers must also hold any affected vehicle in inventory until the battery has been replaced.
Owner letters went out starting August 24, 2026, according to NHTSA. In GM's first quarterly completion report, filed October 7, one of the 11 vehicles had been fixed.
Owner brief
What it means for owners
The odds that a given Escalade IQ is on this list are very small: five Cadillacs out of every IQ and IQL sold. Even so, it costs nothing to check.
- Check your VIN. Enter the 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or look for campaign 26V494 / GM recall N262562600. The VIN is on the driver's side of the dashboard, visible through the windshield, and on the driver's door jamb.
- Know what to expect. GM's filing lists no warning a driver would notice before a failure, so a car that drives normally is not proof it is unaffected. The defect sits inside the sealed pack.
- No parking restriction. NHTSA's record for this campaign carries no "park outside" or "do not drive" advisory. GM's letter asks owners to book the repair as soon as possible.
- Book an EV-certified dealer. GM tells owners to confirm the dealer is certified for EV work before booking. Plan for the car to be in the shop for more than a day; courtesy transportation depends on eligibility under GM's standard policy.
- Cost. The battery replacement is free. Cadillac customer service is 1-800-333-4223.
If your Escalade IQ or IQL was built outside May 2026, it is not part of this campaign. If you received a letter or the VIN lookup shows the recall as open, the remedy is available now.
