Escalade 'Service Theft Alarm' warning tied to the rear defogger, GM says
A GM bulletin says 2026-2027 Escalade, Escalade IQ and IQL owners may see a theft alarm message while the rear defogger runs. GM is still investigating and advises owners to keep driving.
With cold mornings arriving, owners of the newest Cadillac Escalades may see a warning they did not expect. A General Motors preliminary bulletin, PIT6551A, says 2026 and 2027 Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL models can show a "Service Theft Alarm System" message while the rear window defogger is running. Engineering has not found the cause yet, and GM tells dealers not to replace any parts for it.
What happens
The message appears in the driver information center, and a dealer scan finds trouble code B192A, symptom 13, stored in the body control module. The bulletin applies to vehicles with the theft-deterrent alarm that includes glass-breakage sensing and a self-powered horn, option code UTR. GM says automatic stop/start events make the code more likely to set.
Owners may not even know the defogger was on. GM points out that it can switch on by itself during cold-weather starts and with remote start. The setting sits under Settings, then Vehicle, Climate and Air Quality, and Auto Rear Defog.
GM's advice is simple. If the message appears at startup, owners can press the acknowledge button, the check mark on the steering wheel, to clear it, and the vehicle can be driven normally. At the dealer, the bulletin calls only for confirming the condition and clearing the code. If the code is current, or the message appears with the defogger off, the bulletin does not apply and normal diagnosis follows. GM issued the document on September 22 and updated it on September 28 to add Australia and New Zealand.
Two more Escalade bulletins without a final fix
GM has two other open preliminary bulletins on recent Escalades:
- Heated seats that stop working when the cabin is warm. PIT6539 covers 2026 Escalade and Escalade ESV models whose heated seats will not work when the interior is warmer than 86°F. GM describes seats that work on a cool morning, then stop after the SUV has been parked and the cabin has warmed up during the day. It suspects body control module software and says owners can keep driving while engineering works on a fix.
- "Service Steering Column Lock" message. PIT6549 covers the 2025-2026 Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade IQ and the 2026 IQL. Dealers are told not to replace the column lock module, but to clear code U3000 and put the vehicle through four sleep cycles to confirm the code stays away. If it comes back, normal diagnosis follows.
Owner brief
What it means for owners
- Theft alarm message: if it appears on a cold start or after remote start, check whether Auto Rear Defog is on. Clearing the message with the check button is GM's own advice.
- When to book a visit: if the message appears with the defogger off, have the dealer diagnose it, because that falls outside this bulletin.
- Heated seats: if they stop working on a warm afternoon, let the cabin cool before assuming a failure, and mention PIT6539 at your next service.
- Column lock message: mention PIT6549. A new module is not the fix GM wants at this stage.
- Warranty: these model years should be within Cadillac's four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty unless the mileage is high.
- Not recalls: none of these is a safety recall. You can still check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Dashbird tip
Note each time one of these messages appears, with the date and mileage, in the service history in Dashbird, so the dealer can see the pattern when GM releases a permanent fix.
