Escalade check engine light and warm A/C traced to console lamp wiring
GM says a shorted wire to the center console lamp can blow a fuse on 2021-2026 Escalades, setting the check engine light and leaving the A/C blowing warm air.
A Cadillac Escalade that suddenly blows warm air from the vents and lights up the check engine lamp may have a surprising culprit: a frayed wire to the small lamp inside the center console. A General Motors preliminary bulletin, PIT5869B, updated on August 26, 2026, and filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on September 2, now covers every Escalade and Escalade ESV from the 2021 to the 2026 model year.
The symptoms
GM groups several complaints together:
- the Service Engine Soon light, Cadillac's check engine warning, comes on
- the air conditioning blows warm air
- fuse F4DR is found blown
- trouble codes B1AA3, U3018 and U3505 are stored
On their own these look unrelated, which is why the bulletin exists. A climate problem and an engine warning would normally send a technician in two directions.
The cause
According to GM, circuit 4786, which feeds the front floor console compartment lamp, can short out. When it does, it opens fuse F4DR, one of the fuses that supply the second body control module, and the other systems on that fuse lose power. In some vehicles, GM says, the two wires to the lamp are broken and touching each other near the console lid hinge.
The fix is a wiring repair. If standard diagnosis does not find a root cause, the technician gets to the hinge area of the console lid, inspects the lamp wiring and repairs or replaces any damaged circuits. Replacing the fuse alone would likely not last if the short is still there. GM also notes that service information from the 2025 model year includes diagrams showing every output powered by a given body control module fuse, which helps a technician see what else F4DR feeds.
The same bulletin applies to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which share the Escalade's underpinnings.
A bulletin with a long history
GM first wrote this guidance in November 2021, when the current Escalade was new, and widened the model years in September 2023. The August 2026 revision updated the correction steps and extended the list through the 2026 model year, so the condition has carried across six years of production.
Wiring repairs under warranty follow GM's general wire and connector repair bulletin, 10-00-89-005, rather than a labor time of their own.
Owner brief
What it means for owners
- Notice the combination. Warm air from the A/C together with a check engine light is the pattern GM describes. Either one alone has many other possible causes.
- Mention the bulletin. At the dealer, refer to PIT5869B and say whether the console lamp still works. Being able to point to the problem saves diagnosis time.
- Do not just swap the fuse. If you replace F4DR yourself and it blows again, the short is still there. Book a repair rather than carrying spare fuses.
- Check your coverage. Cadillac's bumper-to-bumper warranty runs four years or 50,000 miles, so many 2021 and 2022 Escalades are past it. Ask for an estimate before the console is taken apart. If the check engine light is tied to an emissions code, ask whether federal emissions coverage of 8 years or 80,000 miles on the emissions control unit applies.
- Hot weather matters. Without air conditioning, a full-size SUV heats up quickly. Get it seen before a long summer trip, especially with children or pets aboard.
- Not a recall. You will not receive a letter. Check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Dashbird tip
If your Escalade's check engine light comes on at the same time the A/C goes warm, plug in Dashbird to read the stored engine codes in plain English before you call the dealer.
