GM links a tilted Escalade camera mirror image to license plate frames

A GM bulletin says some 2025-2026 Escalade rear camera mirror problems come from a plate frame pressing on the camera. Two more camera bulletins cover hitch view and night vision.

If the camera image in your Cadillac Escalade's rearview mirror looks tilted toward the ground, the cause may be bolted to the tailgate rather than buried in the software. A General Motors preliminary bulletin created on September 18, 2026, and filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration five days later, tells dealers to look first at the license plate frame. Two other recent camera bulletins for Cadillac SUVs cover a missing trailer hitch view and the end of a parts restriction on the night vision camera.

A license plate frame can push the camera

Bulletin PIT6550 covers 2025 and 2026 Escalade and Escalade ESV models with the rear camera mirror, option code DRZ, which can show a live camera feed in place of the usual reflection. Owners report that the picture points downward or does not line up with what the rear camera should see.

GM says an aftermarket or dealer-installed license plate frame can press against the rear camera's mounting and push it upward, which skews the image. GM is explicit that this is not a warranty parts repair. The technician checks whether a frame touches the camera mount, then removes, repositions or replaces it so it no longer interferes. The same bulletin applies to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

Hitch view missing after an update

A second bulletin, PIT6540, created on August 31, applies to 2025 Escalade and Escalade ESV models with option code CTT or PZ8. Some owners find the trailer hitch view gone from the camera menu, in some cases after a recent over-the-air update. GM blames a software anomaly, tells dealers not to replace or reprogram any modules, and says the vehicle can be driven normally while engineering investigates. The bulletin will be updated or replaced once GM settles on a fix.

Night vision cameras can be ordered again

The third bulletin, PIT6516C, lifts a restriction rather than describing a fault. Since May 2026, dealers needed approval from GM's Technical Assistance Center before ordering a replacement K172 night vision camera, the camera that feeds the night vision display. GM says it imposed the rule because too many cameras were being replaced unnecessarily. As of August 27, dealers can order the part through the normal process again.

That restriction covered 2021-2026 Escalade and Escalade ESV models, the 2025-2026 Escalade IQ, the 2026 Escalade IQL and the 2026 Vistiq, all with night vision, option code UV3.

Owner brief

What it means for owners

  • Tilted mirror image: look at your plate frame. If it touches the camera housing above the plate, try removing it and see whether the image straightens. If the frame came from the dealer, ask them to swap it for one that clears the camera.
  • Missing hitch view: GM wants no parts changed, so a dealer visit will mostly document the complaint. Keep accepting over-the-air updates, which is where a software fix would most likely arrive. Until then, use the other camera views and a spotter when hitching.
  • Night vision faults: with the restriction over, a confirmed camera failure should not wait on extra approvals. Ask the dealer to diagnose before replacing, because GM says many earlier swaps were not needed.
  • Warranty: 2025 and 2026 models are within Cadillac's four-year, 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty unless the mileage is high. A license plate frame from an outside shop is not GM's part, so ask about cost before a dealer handles it.
  • Not recalls: none of these is a safety recall. You can still check your VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Dashbird tip

If a camera repair or a plate frame swap fixes the problem, note it with the date and mileage in the service history in Dashbird, so the PDF report shows what was done when you sell the car.
